THE EUROPEAN BISON GRAZING AREA.

The European bison (Bison bonasus) grazing area is located in the Northern part of the Lake Pape (Pape polder). It is 200ha large enclosure, consisting of 120ha decidious forest and 80ha of meadows. The 5 animals arrived there in December 2003 from the Netherlands and Germany.

Excursions to the European bison are only available using local guides, tel.: +371 29224331 (Ints Mednis), +371 7505640, e-mail: info@pdf.lv. Entrance in the enclosure is strictly prohibited without the guidance. The excursions in the grazing area are organized all year around, but specially arranging in advance (two weeks) for small groups (5-15persons). The excursions in the grazing area are organized by paying the entrance fee. You should reserve at least one hour for a walk in the grazing area and be prepared by nature presence e.g. tall grass, ditches, muddy places and changing weather conditions as well as insects.
Since theses animals are wild and not supplementary fed, visitors should be patient and silent to observe or find them.

All year around visitors can use the observation tower at the entrance of the grazing area!
