Polder meadows

The polder of Pape is a drained area in the flood-lands protected by dikes in meadows near the lake that are subject to flooding. The current landmass of the polder meadows north of the lake is 550 ha.

A polder station was constructed in order to maintain the polder. The polder station began its operations in the early 1970s. Prior to the construction of the pump station, the wet coastal meadows were used only for the mowing of hay.

Humidity of the soil is regulated in the station with the help of pumps. In the spring and autumn, water through the land amelioration system is drained into the draining-ditches, from where it ends up in the main ditch and from which it is pumped further on into the ditch that is connected to Lake Pape. If necessary, pumps may also work in the opposite direction, and in this way irrigating the fields.
