River Līgupe

Apskates objekts

Līgupe is one of the rivers in the drainage basin of Lake Pape. It flows through bog Ķirbas collecting and bringing approximately 25 million m³ of water in the lake annually. In the last kilometre of its flow before mouth at the lake, the river flows through a channel on the banks of which is an alder forest. Līgupe is important for migratory fish species (salmon, trout), which spawn in the upper reaches of the river. The mouth at the lake Pape is a feeding place for gulls and terns.

The riverbed of Līgupe has been modified several times. For the first time it was straightened in 1929 by hand digged channel. From 1969 the mouth at the lake was blocked with sluice in order to channel part of water to Paurupe. In 1996 gates of sluice were opened to allow waters of Līgupe to flow into Lake Pape again.
